The incident happened near Mt. Equinox, in the town of Manchester, Vermont, at around 8:30 a.m Wednesday, Feb. 26, according to Manchester Police.

The plane, a Piper Cherokee Charger, had taken off from Martin State Airport in Middle River, Maryland, shortly after 6 a.m., Baltimore station WBAL reports.

Nearly a dozen police and fire agencies responded to the remote wreck site, many hindered by fog, ice, and snow that was four feet deep in spots, fire officials said.

Roughly an hour and a half after the crash, a New York State Police aviation crew spotted the wreck and lowered rangers down to the scene. Using a winch system, they lifted all three people into a helicopter and transported them to a hospital in Manchester.

The three victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. One patient was later airlifted to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Manchester Police thanked the greater Northshire community for aiding in the rescue operation.

“Your support—whether through providing snowshoes, snowmobiles, or food—played a crucial role in ensuring a successful rescue operation,” the agency said on Facebook. “Thank you for your generosity and unwavering support.”
